Google AdWords Affiliate Policy Change Questions

This morning I emailed Google’s support to find answers to my 3 questions:

  1. Can I still use the affiliate merchant’s URL?
  2. If I use the affiliate merchant’s URL, what are my chances of it getting displayed?
  3. So may I drop the "aff" or "affiliate" from all my Google ads?

I expect to receive an answer from them on Monday or Tuesday. I’ll keep you posted on Google’s official word on this issue.

It looks like I can’t run away from creating affiliate web sites after all. I have tried to do that for way too long. Google had now made it quite clear they prefer affiliates with their own web sites. I used the frame method where I hide the affiliate URL in my domain forwarding URL. Or I simply use a subdomain and create a file "index.html" that redirects to the affiliate URL. I posted about creating subdomains in November 2004.

Google’s new rules may be good news for us affiliates. First of all, it makes it harder for all of us but as the saying goes "When the going gets tough, the tough get going!". This might discourage a lot of people but we will get tougher and get around it instead of complaining. Secondly, the best ads gets displayed. So what that means is you’ve gotta write a better ad.

I’ve seen one of campaigns make a lot of money all of sudden this week and a bunch of other campaigns slowing down for no apparent reason! Then I realised the ones that were slowing down were the ones using the default merchant domain. The ones that continued making money were the ones with my domain name.

If you’re planning to purchase domain names for your affiliate programs, I know where to get a good deal for you….

Today I purchased 8 domain names. 7 of them for my affiliate products and 1 for personal use. I created 1 domain name for each affiliate program "niche". They are going to be used as a "landing page" to receive all my PPC traffic visitors and also to split test the affiliate programs of a particular niche.

RegisterFly is my domain registrar of choice. Why? Because the domain names cost only $7.99 per year if you know how to enter the promo code… Its really very simple! RegisterFly has a weekly promotion for their services at and you’ll get all the promo codes there.

My favourite service is ProtectFly. ProtectFly helps to encrypt your information from spammers, scammers and other irritants who harvest your emails and particulars from your domain name’s registered information that is open to public. I don’t know about you but I don’t wish to have everyone in the world know my address just by searching for the owner of! ProtectFly does all that for $0.99 per year per domain name.

If you register your domain names now and in the coming few days or when the offer is still open, you get 100% free ProtectFly protection for all your RegisterFly domains. You can read about it at

I’ve had my domain names getting approved within 4 hours after I purchased them. These guys are really fast. I’ve never been disappointed with their support response time. These guys get my 2 thumbs up!

“This is what is, ok. I said empty your mind be formless, shapeless, like water. Now you put water into a cup it becomes the cup; you put water into a bottle it becomes the bottle; you put it into teapot it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend.”
- Bruce Lee

This quote has gotten me through times like this, where you must adapt to any environment and using whatever tools available you succeed.

Your site is inspiring… I have no doubt that you can adapt and make even more profits using landing pages… autoresponders etc…

The technique is not relevant it is your attitude that counts… by making adwords 123 work for you, you’ve already passed 99% of the internet marketing community…

Good luck in the road ahead.
