Most anyone, when they think of a website, thinks of .com. This is natural because it is the most widely used domain extension on the internet. In all honesty, this should be the first choice for any business. .com websites are available for the first year at a price of USD $5.95, for each additional year, you can expect to pay USD $9.29 yearly.

The Second Best Web Domain

After .com, .net is the second best web domain extension on the internet and is controlled by Verisign. .net comains was generally intended to be used for those who provided networks to the world at large, but any business can now use the domain. This domain will generally cost about the same as a .com website, the first year costing USD $5.95, additional years costing USD $9.29 yearly.

The Cheapest Best Web Domain

.info is by far the cheapest of all web domains. This domain extension, though not restricted in use, is generally used for informational websites. The .info signifies to people that they will find more information on the website than they will selling or advertisements in most cases. This domain will generally start out at USD 99 cents during the first year of registration, after that it will generally run about the same as the others at USD $9.29 yearly.

The problem with .info domains is they are prone to “black hat” search engine optimizers that put up junk web sites that are created with very little useful content and lots of ads, designed to earn advertising revenue as its number one goal. Therefore, if you want to be taken seriously, get a .com or .net domain instead.

Other Web Domains

• .ws – Though originally created for the country of Samoa, the ws domain is a good abbreviation for the word web site. The cost for a ws domain registration usually starts at USD $28.88 per year.
• .us – This is a restricted domain that is only available for use to an entity, organization, resident, or citizen of the United States. Typically, though not required, most governmental websites at a local and state level use this extension. Please note that any form of “whois privacy” will not work with the .us domain. The us domain registration costs for this domain starts at USD $8.88 yearly.
• .tk – starting out at USD $6.95 yearly, but requiring a two year upfront purchase, which adds up to USD $13.90 for the initial start up costs. The tk web domain also has a free tk domain services that allows you to own a free tk domain as long as you receive above 25 page views within 90 days.
• .eu – The eu web address caters for web sites in the European Union. They cost USD $11.44 yearly.
• .edu – The edu web address is reserved exclusively for educational websites, which usually refers to educational institutions in the USA. Other schools from non-USA countries may have a country code after the .edu domain name. These domains csot USD $40.00 per year.

The best web domain is one that identifies your company and appeals to your users. Choose the right domain that fits what you intend to do, where you live and what you want to display to your potential customers.
