From what I discovered, if you submit a similar article to multiple article directories at the same time, only 1 of them will rank decently on the search engines, assuming that your target keyword phrase does not have a lot of competition.
In my conclusion, Google seems to like a few article directories and if they see article directory A and B with the same article but they like article directory A better, they will rank the article on article directory A higher in their rankings. It makes sense to me to submit to the article directories that Google likes so mass submissions to article directories is out for me when I only know of a few article directories that Google likes from my testing.

I wasn't a big fan of ArticlesBase (on your condemned list), but I've noticed that it had me on the first page of Google for a good period of time for a certain keyword.
As for Squidoo, I gave it a chance, but it's totally useless.
Here's what I have noticed: If you have a certain topic or niche that hasn't been on Squidoo yet, and you publish said niche on Squidoo, it will rank well, but if you happen to be the second lens on that particular subject, ranking will be non-existent in Google.
I'm sorry, but I have to use this example: If you do a Google search for Eiro Research, you will see a Squidoo lens on the first page. You'll also notice that the lens looks like it was slapped together in 1.5 seconds, copied and pasted. Meanwhile, I took lots of time building my lens, nice article, nice photos and videos, and guess what?
It doesn't even show up on the first 30 pages of Google! I gave up at the 30th page, and that's why I don't love Squidoo.
Unless I have no idea what I'm talking about, hopefully someone else has noticed that same thing.

Nope, I have not tried that. I submit my articles manually one by one. It does not take long because I have a maximum of 9 places to submit to.

The article directories I submit to rank very well in the search engines. If someone types my target keyword phrase into a search engine, visits my article on one of the article directories, there is a good chance of getting the visitor to click through to my web site and/or affiliate link. I don't think I will get too many visitors from people browsing the article directories.
It all starts and ends at selecting the right keyword phrase that will rank well in the search engines.

There is a flaw in the logic of submitting to article directories to lure visitors to a website.
If someone discovers an article at one of the article directories listed by using a Google, they mot likely will read the article at the article directory site...there is no guarantee they will surf to a submitter's website.
Watch the average internet user, not the geeks who follow every link, to find out how the majority of people find a website.
The reality is, article directories are not as important for increasing traffic, as you may believe.
